Edema is the appearance of excess fluid in the intercellular space. This phenomenon can appear locally or spread throughout the entire body. This condition is not only an aesthetic problem that causes inconvenience, but can also indicate pathological processes in many important organs and cause negative consequences in the future. How to deal with edema in pregnant women, and what helps most effectively?

During pregnancy, many internal organs and the systems that ensure their functioning undergo many changes, many of which directly or indirectly contribute to the accumulation of excess fluid between the cells, and therefore swelling of varying degrees accompanies almost every period of waiting for a baby.

Edema caused by:

  • an increase in blood circulating in the veins
    , which requires more fluid to move;
  • the appearance of amniotic fluid
    ;
  • accumulation of sodium,
    a feature of which is the retention of water in the body - this is facilitated by progesterone (pregnancy hormone).

When pregnancy proceeds normally, swelling should appear only after 30 weeks and only on the legs.

The appearance of an unpleasant phenomenon on the face, abdomen, hips, arms and lower back may indicate serious pathological processes in a woman’s body, these are:

  • Kidney failure
    - the organ cannot cope with the function of removing water from the body, the amount of which increases greatly, which leads to numerous complications in the kidneys.
  • Varicose veins
    - pressure of the uterus on the pelvic vessels, weight gain, changes in hormonal levels and venous insufficiency cause a violation of the outflow of blood, which leads to the development of a pathological process.
  • - a serious complication of pregnancy, mainly characterized by disorders in the cardiovascular and urinary systems, which cause the release of fluid into the intercellular space.
  • Allergic reaction
    - changes in the immune system of the expectant mother contribute to the appearance of allergies even to previously familiar foods or other irritants.

In these cases, you need to quickly contact an observing gynecologist, who will identify the factor that provokes the appearance of pathological edema and prescribe treatment aimed at eliminating it.

How to determine edema during pregnancy? The easiest way to understand whether there is swelling or not is to press your finger on the skin.

If the skin quickly evens out, everything is fine; if not, and a light depression remains, it’s most likely swelling.

Description and composition of green tea

Green tea is better known as a wonderful tonic drink that has a beneficial effect on the functioning of human internal organs. The record amount of nutrients in the composition makes it an essential element of cosmetic products. That green tea is beneficial has been known since ancient times. But only in the last decade have scientists seriously begun to study its effect on human health, and cosmetologists have become interested in it.

Black and green tea are obtained from the same plants. The collected leaves are either crushed and dried until black, or steamed to produce green tea. Thanks to this technology, green leaves not only retain their natural color, but also preserve tannins, which have strong antioxidant properties, and other useful microelements.

People living in eastern countries honor the ancient culture of tea drinking and also use tea in home cosmetics. In the homeland of the great drink in China, its properties are highly valued, rightfully considered a medicine that can prolong life, fill it with harmony, energy and peace of mind. It was believed that they could cure about 400 diseases. Green tea turned out to be especially indispensable for restoring the lost freshness and beauty of the lower eyelid area.

American scientists have established the following phenomenon: where green tea is consumed most, there are almost no skin ailments, although the sun in these places is very active. This happens due to the ability of a special substance found in green tea to suppress the enzyme responsible for the proliferation of cancer cells.

The green drink contains a unique amount of chemicals, most of which are concentrated in the leaves, the most important among them:

  • Tannins
    . High quality green tea is twice as rich in tannins as black tea. Catechins, tannins, polyphenols and their compounds - excellent antioxidants, more effective than vitamins - occupy 1/3 of its composition. They are stimulating in nature, increase immunity, suppress viruses and microbes on the skin.
  • Alkaloids
    . In terms of caffeine content, green tea is ahead of natural coffee. The percentage of caffeine ranges from 1 to 4% and depends on the type of tea and method of preparation. Small leaves contain more theine (a softer analogue of caffeine); brewing with boiling water increases its content in a cup of drink. These substances promote vasodilation, improve blood circulation and nutrition of the skin.
  • Minerals
    . A huge complex of microelements is especially relevant due to its lack in modern ecology. Green tea contains fluoride, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, iodine, gold and other elements. In addition, it contains essential oils. Most of them are destroyed when brewed, but you can buy green tea essential oil extract at the pharmacy. These substances nourish, rejuvenate the skin, make it soft and smooth.
  • Vitamins
    . Green tea contains almost all known vitamins - A, B1, B2, B3, C, E, F, K, P, PP, U. By interacting with each other, they enhance their healing abilities: protect cells from destruction, remove free radicals , fight bacteria and viruses. Tea is rich in vitamin E, which strengthens cell membranes, has an antioxidant effect, strengthens skin turgor, makes it firm and elastic.
  • Squirrels
    . Protein substances make up 1/4 of the tea; there are especially many of them in Japanese teas. When brewed, not all components pass into the water, only partially, but this does not diminish the nutritional value of the infusion for the delicate skin around the eyes.
  • Amino acids
    . The composition of green tea has not yet been fully studied, but 17 beneficial amino acids have been identified in it. The most important acid for the skin is glutamic acid. It helps to activate the production of your own collagen in the skin, improves its condition, and slows down aging, including under the lower eyelids.

Treatment of edema during pregnancy with folk remedies

Folk remedies during pregnancy are aimed at strengthening the walls of blood vessels, normalizing the functioning of the kidneys and cardiovascular system and removing excess fluid from the body. Folk remedies, which are completely natural, are practically harmless to the body of the expectant mother and are recognized by many gynecologists. Despite this, before starting a course of treatment, you should consult a leading doctor.

, who will assess the degree of swelling, identify the cause of its appearance, analyze the possible side effects of the folk remedy and help draw up an optimal treatment plan for the individual body.

So, what can you drink for edema during pregnancy?

Herbs

Diuretics during pregnancy for edema, from natural diuretics, unlike synthetic analogues, when used correctly, do not contribute to the removal of minerals and electrolytes from the body.

  1. Pharmaceutical camomile.
    The crushed flowers of the plant (2 tablespoons) are poured with boiling water (250 ml) and steamed in a water bath for 20 minutes. The strained and cooled decoction is taken 100 ml no more than 3 times a day.

When taking tea for edema during pregnancy, it is worth remembering that there are diuretic herbs that promote uterine contraction; their use is strictly prohibited - these are parsley root, juniper and strawberries.

Not only herbs are distinguished by their diuretic properties, there are also many vegetables and berries - natural diuretics that have restorative, sedative and anti-inflammatory properties, containing a large amount of vitamins and microelements.

The following have worked well for relieving edema during pregnancy:

  • cranberry juice,
  • lingonberry leaves and berries,
  • blackberry,
  • chokeberry,
  • viburnum,
  • strawberry.

In order to brew medicinal fruit juice, you will need 500 g of crushed berries and 3 liters of water, bring to a boil and leave for at least 3 hours; if desired, you can add a minimum amount of sugar. You can drink fruit juice no more than 2 glasses per day.

No less useful are freshly squeezed juices from vegetables such as:

  • carrot,
  • pumpkin,
  • tomato,
  • radish,
  • cucumber,
  • cabbage.

Birch sap, which is drunk 100 ml 2 times a day, is also effective.

The fruits of rose hips, hawthorn and juniper, which are poured with boiling water at the rate of 1:2, boiled for 10 minutes and left for 1 day, will relieve swelling during pregnancy. Decoctions are taken 100 ml 2 times a day.

The red berry is characterized by diuretic, restorative, anti-inflammatory, and choleretic properties. And it is recommended for expectant mothers when edema appears. To ensure that the treatment does not have side effects, it is necessary to choose a watermelon that ripened in August, with no yellowish veins on the cut and with a clear characteristic pattern on the outside of the peel - these signs indicate the absence of nitrates in the fruit. Chemicals used in growing watermelon can lead to poisoning and pose a danger to the baby. During pregnancy, watermelon is eaten up to 500 grams at a time, separately from other foods and a few hours before bedtime.

Contraindications to the use of green tea

The skin around the eyes needs gentle, caring care.
Green tea does not cause allergies and is practically harmless when used externally, but some precautions should still be taken. When using green tea under the eyes as part of home cosmetics, consider the following:

  1. Product quality
    . You only need the best for your eyes. The maximum benefit can be extracted only from high-quality large-leaf green tea. Small grains of tea in the form of granules have the least benefit; in addition, dust particles can get into the eyes and damage the mucous membranes. The option with bags is also not bad, if they do not contain obvious tea garbage that does not bring any benefit. The color of good tea is light green, pistachio is the best variety, dark, dirty green is spoiled or overdried.
  2. Unwanted additives
    . Pure green tea is not allergic to the vast majority of people and does not harm the skin. But additives in it in the form of flavorings, fruit particles, flower petals may be your antigen or too rough for the thin epidermis under the eyes.
  3. Presence of caffeine
    . There is more caffeine in green tea than in natural coffee. Therefore, refrain from cosmetic procedures based on it immediately before bed. If you are very sensitive to alkaloids, then a surge of vigor will inappropriately deprive you of sleep.
  4. Color pigment
    . The color of green tea is not as pronounced as black tea, but it becomes richer when brewed with boiling water. Follow the time of application of lotions (compresses) indicated in the recipes, otherwise the bruises under the lower eyelids will take on a new shade, especially if the skin is endowed with aristocratic pallor. Usually 10-15 minutes are enough, you can repeat the procedure several times a day.
  5. Drying effect
    . Any aqueous solutions lead to drying of the epidermis, including tea leaves. There is a way out - make it a rule after the tea ceremony to blot your skin with a napkin and apply your usual cream under your lower eyelids. If you are struggling with dark circles, then it should be deeply moisturizing, toning or anti-aging. If you want to remove bags and swelling, then give preference to a toning cream with an effect against signs of fatigue and swelling of the eyelids.

Important! You should not carry out tea treatments for the eyes in winter before going outside. Skin saturated with moisture will not tolerate frost well.

Foot baths

In addition to natural remedies for internal use, additional effects on the blood vessels and tissues of the body with the help of medicinal baths are recommended to relieve swelling. To prepare a foot bath, use cool water to which you add:

  • sea salt,
  • St. John's wort decoction,
  • nettle infusion,
  • elderberry, mint and hemp (collection),
  • linden blossom decoction.

Take a foot bath for 15 minutes, then lie on your left side, slightly raising your legs, and rest for half an hour.

Aimed at eliminating and preventing the appearance of edema, it is a balanced meal rich in animal proteins and fermented milk products. In addition, natural diuretics are introduced into the diet, these are:

It is necessary to limit salt, but you should not go on a salt-free diet - this disrupts the acid-base balance in the body. It is necessary to exclude fried, spicy, smoked and canned foods.

A good role is played by giving up refined foods and fatty sweets,

for which there is a useful alternative - dried fruits.

Don't limit the amount of water you drink

, in order to function normally the body requires at least 2 liters of water. Only it should come from healthy sources: filtered water, freshly squeezed juices, decoctions, fruit drinks and broths. It is better to avoid tea, sweet lemonades and sparkling water.

Where does swelling come from and what to do about it? About this in the video:

Diet for edema: how to get rid of excess fluid? A therapeutic diet can help a person suffering from edema get rid of excess fluid in the body.

Edema always signals that a malfunction has occurred in the body. They manifest themselves in chronic heart failure, exhaustion, kidney damage, severe diseases of the digestive system and some other diseases. Therefore, a diet that can help the patient get rid of excess fluid in the body is one of the ways to treat the disease.

Depending on the diagnosis, there are varieties of decongestant diets. For example, when treating edema in patients with malnutrition, a diet rich in protein and vitamins is effective. If the potassium content is low, causing swelling, a diet with a predominance of foods containing this microelement is recommended. In case of severe edema, a therapeutic diet with a low sodium content can help to increase the release of fluid from the body.

In the treatment of edema, an important role is played by the patient's healthy diet, which includes sufficient amounts of animal proteins: meat, eggs, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream and fish. It is advisable to introduce foods rich in potassium into the diet: apricots, melons, orange and tangerine juices, potatoes, parsley, rice. Soy products and natural yoghurts are especially recommended.

The diet should be rich in carbohydrates found in fruits that have a diuretic effect, with the exception of grapes and bananas. Freshly squeezed juices, herbal teas and other low-caffeine drinks have a good diuretic effect.

What are the benefits of tea compress

Brewed tea leaves are a storehouse of vitamins and microelements. Black tea has a decongestant and tonic effect on the skin. Strong brewing of black tea is effective in treating conjunctivitis.

Important: black tea lotions should not be used by women with pale, fair skin. The coloring properties of tea leaves can enhance dark shadows under the eyes.

The peculiarities of using tea lotions are explained by the beneficial properties of tea leaves:

  • vitamin B is an element of beauty, helps relieve signs of stress and fatigue on the face;
  • essential oils for wrinkles;
  • tannins;
  • caffeine;
  • Vitamins C and P included in the tea strengthen capillary vessels and activate the regenerative processes of the skin.

What does using tea bags help with:

  • soothes irritated skin, relieves inflammation;
  • activates collagen production, thereby eliminating fine wrinkles;
  • Vitamin P is particularly beneficial, due to which tea has a rejuvenating effect on the skin;
  • disinfects the skin, prevents the proliferation of infections and bacteria.

Prohibited foods during the decongestant diet

To treat edema, first of all, daily salt intake is limited to 1.0-1.5 g per day, and liquid intake to 600-1500 ml.

It is important to exclude salty, fried, spicy, all foods containing a large amount of salt: canned fish and meat, caviar, ham, brisket, brisket, sausages, sausages, nuts, sauces and cheeses. Fatty desserts, cream, mayonnaise, wheat flour, alcohol and any products containing artificial additives are prohibited. In the first days of treatment for edema, the patient's protein and fluid intake is limited. For effective therapy, you should give up milk, tea and compote in favor of drinking water.

A quick test for swelling: press your fingers on the shin bone. A sign of edema will be a fingerprint. If you suspect hidden edema, you should consult a doctor.

Diuretic drink recipes

The simplest and most accessible diuretic drink is green tea with milk. You can prepare it at any time at home. Green tea is brewed in the usual way and milk is later added to taste. For the healing composition to have the best effect, you should choose milk with low fat content. An improved recipe for a diuretic drink, but perhaps less palatable, is as follows:

  • one liter of milk is heated almost to a boil;
  • green tea (about 2 grams) is added to warm milk;
  • The cooled drink is ready to drink (you can drink up to 1.5 liters of this tea per day).

Should I add milk?

As mentioned above, by pouring milk into tea, we achieve a mild laxative effect on the body. Green tea, like black tea, contains large amounts of caffeine, which provokes surges in blood pressure or tachycardia. Milk softens the effect of caffeine and actually neutralizes it; in addition, the taste of tea with milk becomes pleasant and noble.

Features of diets against edema

  • Uncontrolled and prolonged use of diuretics can lead to dehydration and disruption of water-salt balance.
  • Abuse of a decongestant diet is fraught with the appearance of severe weakness. At risk are patients with liver and kidney failure.
  • To improve the taste of salt-free food during a therapeutic diet, table salt substitutes are used.
  • In case of severe swelling, fasting days will help to cope with the malaise. But without control, they can worsen the problem, so it is important to listen to the opinion of your doctor. The most physiological are curd, milk and rice fasting days.
