Why do you need a diet for hyperuricemia?
Hyperuricemia occurs when there is a violation of the metabolism of purines - organic substances that are metabolized in the liver to uric acid. If its concentration exceeds 6-6.8 mg/dl, the excretion of uric acid salts in urine increases. This condition is called hyperuricosuria. It is dangerous for serious diseases:
- urate nephrolithiasis;
- secondary pyelonephritis;
- kidney failure;
- tubulointerstitial nephritis;
- asthenic syndrome;
- constant joint pain.
The level of purines and acid depends on their intake from foods and dietary habits. Therefore, when diagnosing hyperuricemia, the doctor prescribes a diet aimed at:
- restoration of purine base metabolism;
- decrease in acid levels in urine and blood;
- prevention of stone formation in the kidneys and urinary tract;
- normalization of renal excretory function.
In case of excessive excretion of uric acid salts in the urine, the diet must be combined with pharmacotherapy.
To reduce the concentration of acid, drugs that affect the metabolism of purines are used - Febuxostat, Allohexal, Adenuric. As part of the diet, foods with a high concentration of purines are excluded.
A balanced diet restores metabolism, as a result of which the level of acid in the blood decreases. When following a diet, the pH of urine shifts towards alkalis. This prevents the crystallization of salts from which urate stones are formed.
How to remove salts from joints
To make a more accurate diagnosis regarding the presence and composition of salts, it is recommended to visit a medical facility and take a comprehensive urine test and complete blood count. Based on the results of the examination, it will be possible to judge whether additional treatment and diet are necessary.
It is important to understand that each type of salt metabolism disorder requires separate treatment: first, alkaline salts are removed, then uric acid salts, and then oxalate salts. Moreover, if the functioning of the kidneys and urinary system is impaired, no salts will be removed
First of all, it is necessary to establish the functioning of these organs. This will make it much easier to get rid of excess salt.
Removing salt deposits, as a rule, involves following a diet and avoiding foods containing purines, performing physical exercises, as well as carrying out special cleansing measures with the help of medications and traditional medicine.

Prohibited foods rich in uric acid
The uric acid diet limits foods with purine nucleotides. Products that contain more than 150 mg of purines per 100 g are removed from the menu. If you follow a low-purine diet, about 450 mg of acid is excreted in urine per day. When its content decreases, the risk of nephrolithiasis and gout decreases.

In case of accompanying complications - gout, urolithiasis - the table is supplemented with other harmful products. When following a diet, doctors advise limiting salt, dried cereals, dried fruits (except prunes), and meat products.
For hyperuricemia, the daily diet should contain no more than 200-250 mg of purines.
Fully or partially limited products
To reduce uric acid levels, sharply limit:
- Offal (lungs, liver, tongue, kidneys, brains).
- Meat, meat products and any types of canned meat. Animal protein is limited to 1 g per 1 kg of weight. The red meat of young animals contains the highest amount of purines.
- Fish dishes (especially carp, halibut, anchovies, sea bass, sardines, tuna, mussels and herring) and canned food.
- Fish/meat/mushroom broths. In rare cases, you can use secondary broth (the first one is drained after boiling for 10 minutes).

List of foods low in purines
With hyperuricemia, you can eat foods that normalize the acid-base balance of urine. Therefore, a plant-milk diet is recommended for patients. Limit soups made with meat or mushrooms because they contain acids and extractive components. The diet includes fruits and grains with small amounts of purine compounds.
Low purine foods
Product groups | Examples |
fruits, berries | sweet grapes, apricots, nectarines, apples, melon, watermelon, cherries, peaches, gooseberries |
vegetables, greens | pumpkin, squash, fresh cucumbers, beets, potatoes, carrots |
cereals and porridges | millet, semolina, buckwheat, oatmeal |
dried fruits, nuts | prunes, dates, dried apricots, walnuts |
meat | turkey, rabbit, chicken fillet |
dairy | acidophilus, kefir, cream, sour cream, fermented baked milk, yogurt, hard cheese, cottage cheese |
fish, seafood | kelp |
beverages | vegetable juices, fruit drinks and compotes, bearberry infusions, mineral water, coffee with milk |
other products | chicken eggs, granulated sugar, honey, non-acidic sauces, jam, pastille, butter |
Women with hyperuricosuria are often diagnosed with urate urolithiasis. To prevent the precipitation of acid salts, seafood with omega-3 and omega-9 is included in the diet. Unsaturated fatty acids stimulate metabolism and reduce acid levels in urine.
Authorized Products
When uric acid is high, the diet includes foods rich in calcium, potassium and alkaline valences:
- Natural juices.
- Dairy and fermented milk products.
- Vegetables, fruits and berries (seaweed, pumpkin, cabbage, grapes, forest apples, all citrus fruits, figs, bananas, raisins, currants, gooseberries, lingonberries, strawberries, cherries).
- Alkaline mineral water, purified water up to 2 liters. If there is a deficiency of fluid, the urine will become acidic and conditions for stone formation will be created.
Allowed to use:
- Bread (rye, bran and wheat), but limited. Preference should be given to yeast-free baked goods.
- Vegetarian borscht, vegetable soups and soups.
- Lean meat and fish 2-3 times a week. They are boiled or baked after boiling. Frying without first boiling the meat is also not recommended. When choosing meat, you need to take into account that the purine content in chicken legs is much higher than in breasts, and also in pork legs it is higher than in tenderloin. The meat of active predatory fish (tuna, pike) contains more purines than flounder. If we compare chicken and turkey, the latter contains 4.5 times less purines.
- All vegetables except legumes and those containing oxalic acid. Vegetables should be eaten raw before meals.
- Any cereal, but in moderation.
- One or two eggs per day, using any method of preparation. Its protein does not contain purines.
- Among sweets, marmalade, jam, honey, marshmallows, caramel, and marshmallows are allowed.
- Before going to bed, drink 1 glass of liquid (bran decoction, juices, water with lemon or other citrus fruits, herbal tea, kefir).

What foods reduce uric acid levels?
A diet to reduce uric acid in the body should be followed for 1-3 months until metabolism is restored. Ignoring the rules of rational nutrition is dangerous due to complications - gout, nephro- and urolithiasis, kidney failure. To lower the concentration of purines in the blood, you should:
- exclude alcohol;
- eat small meals up to 6 times a day;
- do fasting days up to 3 times a month;
- limit foods with proteins;
- introduce fresh fruits and foods with potassium into the diet;
- refuse rich broths.
When following a diet, special attention is paid to heat treatment of foods. The meat must be boiled, because during cooking up to 50% of purine bases are removed from it. Dietary boiled meat is recommended for use in stews. They are introduced into the diet every other day or less often.
In the intervals between main meals, patients should drink more fluids. When following a diet, do fasting days. To reduce the load on the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys, eat easily digestible foods that shift the urine balance to the alkaline side - cottage cheese, yogurt, fruits.
Excessive consumption of meat products leads to an increase in acid levels in the body, which can lead to the deposition of crystals in the kidney tubules and stone formation in the urinary tract.
The duration of the hypopurine diet depends on the form of the disease. If you are prone to kidney stones, nephrologists advise adhering to a balanced diet throughout your life.
Fasting days
The diet on such days consists of certain foods. You can use milk and products made from it, drink one and a half liters of milk a day, low-fat fermented baked milk. The combination can be in the form of a liter of kefir or milk with the inclusion of 300-400 grams of low-fat cottage cheese in the menu.
A vegetable fasting day consists of one and a half kilograms of cucumbers or other vegetables. The same amount of fruit is required, preference is given to citrus fruits and apples. An excellent effect is observed on fasting days with the inclusion of watermelons in the diet.
As observations show, increased levels of uric acid can be reduced through nutrition and diet, which is the main condition in the fight against the disease. When the first symptoms of the disease appear, it would be a good idea to reconsider your diet, but the disease will gradually recede without causing complications to the kidneys. A diet is combined with medications, and before limiting or, conversely, relying on certain foods, it is better to consult a doctor.
Features of the diet during exacerbation of gout and urolithiasis
If hyperuricemia is accompanied by urolithiasis or gout, serious adjustments are made to the diet. Features of the choice of products depend on the severity of concomitant pathologies - the presence of pyelonephritis, cystitis, obstruction of the urinary ducts. A diet with high uric acid in the blood is followed from 3 weeks to 6-12 months.
In case of impaired renal function and intensive acid synthesis, you should:
- limit table salt to 3 g/day;
- increase the amount of vegetables in the diet;
- eat small portions every 2-2.5 hours;
- consume diuretic foods and drinks - melon, chamomile tea, watermelon, bearberry or linden blossom decoction.
Fasting and an irrational diet provoke an increase in the amount of acid in the blood, which can lead to an attack of gout.
During periods of relapse of urolithiasis, the basis of the diet is mainly liquid food - cereals, jelly, milk drinks, cream soups. The recommended energy value of the daily diet is 1900-1950 kcal. The amount of protein in foods should be 65-70 g/day.
What does this treatment give?
The medications described above are recommended for the treatment of gout because they provide a number of positive effects:
- Normalization of the level of uric acid concentration in the blood;
- Resorption of special gouty formations - tophi.
- Stopping further development of urolithiasis, which is one of the consequences of the underlying disease.
- Reducing the frequency of exacerbations of gouty arthritis.
Based on the mechanism of action, drugs can be presented in the form of several groups. All of them differ from each other in indications and contraindications, so they should be prescribed exclusively by the attending physician.
Uricodepressive
The effect of taking these drugs is to reduce the amount of uric acid produced in the body. Drugs such as hepatocatalase and allopurinol have a similar effect.
Allopurinol
In pharmacies it is also presented under the names hydroxypyrazolopyrimidine, milurite. As a result of taking it, one of the enzymes necessary for the synthesis of uric acid is blocked. This effect slows down the process of its production.
But before prescribing allopurinol, which can be used to remove uric acid, it is necessary to take into account the indications for use:
- The presence of kidney stones is the main sign of the development of urolithiasis. If we look at the statistics, most - up to 80% of kidney stones appear as a result of exposure to urates.
- Formation of increased amounts of uric acid.
- Regularly occurring attacks of acute gouty arthritis that have complications or are difficult to control.
- The presence of complications in the form of kidney damage.
- Individual intolerance to uricosuric drugs.
After starting treatment with allopurinol, you have to wait only two to three days before the amount of uric acid begins to decrease. It can be completely brought back to normal levels after 10-14 days.
In the first days, the medicine is given in minimal doses, but subsequently it is adjusted to the recommended dose to ensure the necessary therapeutic effect.
The effectiveness of treating gout with allopurinol, which helps remove uric acid, can be judged by the following symptoms:
- regular decrease in the amount of uric acid;
- reduction in the frequency of arthritis attacks, etc.
In the active phase of the disease, treatment is carried out for six months, and from this point on, the dose is reduced to maintenance. Many patients have to take medications for many years, sometimes even their entire lives.
You need to be careful about contraindications for use, which may cause an exacerbation of the attack. People with individual intolerance or the presence of severe chronic kidney and liver diseases should avoid taking the drug. As a replacement for allopurinol, you can use other drugs from this group that are better tolerated, but it should be borne in mind that they are inferior in effectiveness.
Uricosuric
Suppression of unpleasant symptoms of the disease with the help of these drugs is ensured by increased excretion of uric acid by the kidneys. The drugs Kebuzone, Zinchofen, and Urodane have this effect.
The effect of such drugs is based on increasing the volume of urine. Thus, it is possible to improve the functioning of the kidneys in removing uric acid only if the patient drinks up to 2-3 liters of alkalized liquid per day.
But it should be borne in mind that for patients with severe liver and kidney diseases, as well as for patients diagnosed with gastric and duodenal ulcers, taking these drugs is contraindicated.
Mixed
The effect of using these drugs is ensured by a combined mechanism of action. Therefore, with their help it is possible to achieve the best therapeutic effect in the fight against the symptoms of chronic gout. The list of these drugs should include allomaron, which is good for removing uric acid.
Allomaron
This drug is the result of combining two drugs - allopurinol and benzobromarone. This allows you to speed up the process of removing uric acid, minimizing possible side effects. A special feature of the drug is that to achieve a therapeutic effect there is no need to consume alkaline liquids in increased quantities.
The drug can be used by all patients, except those who have an individual intolerance to its components and those with chronic renal failure.
Sample menu for the week
With a high concentration of acids and purines in the blood, patients must strictly monitor their diet. During relapses of urolithiasis and nephrolithiasis, follow diet No. 6. The dietary program must be balanced. Otherwise, a lack of bioactive substances - minerals, vitamins, amino acids - will lead to hypovitaminosis. To avoid this, urologists and nutritionists recommend preparing a diet menu from permitted foods in advance.

Sample menu
Following a diet when uric acid in the blood increases is the key to successfully eliminating the problem. At the same time, you do not need to give up everything at once. The acceptable list of products is wide and allows you to vary the menu depending on your wishes. If we talk about a diet that includes five meals, then a sample menu might look like this:
- For your first breakfast, you can prepare low-fat cottage cheese and tea with milk. It can also be milk with crackers or muesli with kefir. The classic breakfast of oatmeal also remains relevant,
- soon it’s time for a second breakfast, which can be a vegetable salad, a chicken egg with tea, natural yogurt or some fruit,
- for lunch - soup with sour cream, rice with stewed vegetables, boiled chicken fillet, fish soufflé or anything else. Water or tea is suitable as a drink. It is worth noting that eating is not strictly tied to time,
- An afternoon snack can consist of a light and tasty dish such as fruit mousse. In this case, there are no serious restrictions, you can even drink coffee with milk, not to mention rosehip decoction. The main thing is not to overeat, limit yourself to a small snack,
- for dinner - dumplings with cottage cheese or potatoes, vegetable soup or omelet.
This is just a sample menu, and everyone is free to create their own diet for the week, based on the basic requirements. In this way, you can not only take care of your own health, but also not limit yourself to eating delicious dishes.
What can't you eat while on a diet?
A diet with uric acid in the blood involves excluding from the diet foods that contain large quantities of purines. These products include:
- various by-products, namely: liver, heart, brains, kidneys;
- strong broths;
- fried fish, fried meat and other fatty foods;
- soy;
- beans;
- peas;
- smoked products;
- canned food;
- asparagus;
- spinach;
- sorrel;
- strong coffee and tea;
- spices;
- spicy snacks;
- alcohol, etc.
It is recommended to exclude from the diet any foods that stimulate the central nervous system.
Causes
The main causes of hyperuricemia are:
- Features of metabolism and genetic disorders. Each person's body is different, so it may turn out that it does not secrete enough enzymes that can remove uric acid. As a result, acid accumulates in the organs, leading to hyperuricemia.
- Excessive and unhealthy nutrition. Uric acid is formed as a result of the breakdown of substances called purines. In small quantities they are beneficial and have an antioxidant effect. However, when these substances are in excess, excessive amounts of acid are formed. Purines enter the body as a result of consuming foods rich in protein (eggs, fatty meats, offal), as well as alcoholic beverages.
- Side effect from medications. Most often, increased uric acid levels occur due to taking medications for heart disease and hormone therapy.
- An additional symptom to other diseases. These are mainly diseases of the kidneys and urinary system (cystitis, kidney stones), diabetes mellitus, psoriasis, cancer, obesity, atherosclerosis, etc. Hyperuricemia is also one of the components of the metabolic syndrome (a set of diseases that increase the risk of death).
- Age. With age, it becomes more difficult for the body to break down uric acid, which is why it accumulates in the internal organs.
- Hereditary factor. If a person has had problems with high levels of uric acid, then with a high degree of probability this disease can also manifest itself in his children and grandchildren.
Nutritional principles to follow when you have high uric acid
The diet for high uric acid is not as strict as for a number of other disorders, but it requires taking into account some factors, without which you can forget about successfully achieving the desired result.
It is important to understand that the content of harmful elements in urine directly affects the development of all kinds of diseases. If you regulate their quantity, you can reduce the concentration of uric acid without extra effort. Principles to adhere to:
- it is necessary to switch to fractional meals - 3 main meals and two snacks. For those who have been adhering to the principle for a long time: “first I’ll be patient, and then I’ll eat at once for the whole day,” it will not be easy to adapt. However, this is necessary to normalize the amount of uric acid. This is not only due to the fact that it is difficult for the gastrointestinal tract to cope with large amounts of food at one time. The fact is that with elevated uric acid in the blood of women, it is necessary to reduce the amount of purines. Fractional meals allow the body to calmly get rid of them, and uneven food intake will lead to their accumulation;
- the amount of protein in the diet should be reduced. To do this, the amount of meat, fish and legumes in the diet must be reduced, which will have a beneficial effect on the acid content. Fermented milk products will help replace them;
- Exceeding the required amount of proteins and fats will interfere with the removal of uric acid from the body. The rate of fat consumption is no more than 1 gram per 1 kilogram;
- in case of obesity, it is necessary to try to normalize weight. However, you should not do this too abruptly, since the body will not have time to rebuild itself, and the accumulated purines will not go anywhere. Losing weight by 1 kilogram per week is considered optimal;
- fasting and strict diets are unacceptable in this case. If adequate nutrition stops entering the body, useful substances from certain foods will also stop coming along with it. The body will need to use previously accumulated proteins and fats, and as a result of their breakdown, uric acid appears;
- It is recommended to occasionally arrange fasting days. This term does not mean fasting or not eating, but rather eating only certain foods during the day, such as vegetables, fruits or dairy products. Such days can be arranged no more often than once a week;
- You should not focus on other diets, as in this case some foods can cause additional harm. For example, not everyone knows how many purines remain in ordinary broth. When cooking meat or fish, these substances end up in the broth, so you should avoid using it.
Elevated uric acid in the blood: causes
So, the problem is related to food. In particular, these are:
- abuse of red wine and beer;
- long-term diets;
- excessive consumption of meat, fish and offal.
In addition, the cause of the disease is sometimes intense sports and too much stress, as well as taking certain medications (Furosemide, Aspirin and others).
Nutrition rules to reduce it
The easiest way to reduce the concentration of uric acid in the blood is to adhere to the following recommendations (doctors also point to them):
- minimizing foods high in protein in the diet;
- drink plenty of fluids, about 1.5 – 2.5 liters per day;
- preference for plant foods over meat;
- taking vitamin complexes with a so-called “therapeutic” dose of potassium - it inhibits the accumulation of sodium compounds, including urates;
- exclusion from the diet of foods rich in purines and oxalic acid;
- exclusion from the diet of alcoholic beverages (and all others that contain ethyl alcohol);
- periodically (2 – 3 times a month) observe the so-called “fasting” days, during which moderate fasting and abstinence from food of animal origin are maintained;
- inclusion of freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices in the diet - they perfectly help the urinary system, therefore preventing kidney failure, urolithiasis and gout.
All of the above recommendations are not relevant for acute renal failure or other kidney diseases. In such cases, only the attending physician has the right to make recommendations for adjusting the diet based on data from a comprehensive analysis.
What and how much to drink
To accelerate the excretion of purine compounds in the urine, it is necessary to maintain a drinking regime. If your uric acid level is high, you should drink up to 2.5 liters of fluid per day. Suitable drinks include natural juices, compotes, still water, and decoctions that have alkaline properties.
As part of the hypopurine diet, the nephrologist/urologist prescribes:
- fruit juices – apple, grape, apricot,
- vegetable juices – pumpkin, carrot,
- decoctions – buckthorn bark, chamomile, thyme, peppermint,
- mineral water – Essentuki-17, Svalyava, Luzhanskaya, Smirnovskaya, Borjomi.
Fruit and vegetable juices are useful for urolithiasis (KD). If the acid level is high, it is recommended to drink it with soda - no more than 4 g per 1 liter of boiled water.
Proven folk methods
In folk medicine there are remedies that will help speed up the removal of uric acid from the body. According to reviews, the most effective among them are the following:
- A decoction of the husks of bean pods. 1 tablespoon of such husk is poured into 1 liter of water and boiled for 2 hours in a closed container. After cooling, strain and take 1 teaspoon 3 times a day. Course - until the end of the prepared product.
- A decoction of lingonberry leaves. 20 grams of grated fresh leaves are poured with a glass of boiling water and left for 20 - 25 minutes. Next, you can add sugar or honey to taste. Drink like regular tea. It is recommended to drink 2 glasses of this decoction daily.
- A mixture of chamomile, sage and calendula. The dry plant mixture is mixed in equal proportions. 200 grams of this is poured into 1.5 liters of boiling water and left to cool. Next, strain. The resulting infusion is used for warm foot baths (daily for 3 to 4 weeks).
- Apple jelly. To prepare it, take dried apple slices. Approximately 50 grams of these are poured into a glass of boiling water, the container must be closed and wrapped in a thick towel. Leave overnight. In the morning you will get a rather thick jelly that tastes like jam. Eat everything, including dried fruits, with breakfast.
The above folk methods to reduce uric acid in the blood should be used only after consultation with your doctor. For example, in case of kidney failure, the same apple jelly may be contraindicated. A decoction of bean husks is not recommended for gastritis or peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum.
Principles of nutrition
- drink plenty of fluids up to 1.5 liters,
- taking herbal infusions with a weak diuretic effect - kidney tea,
- limiting table salt. Salt can be consumed by adding salt to food, no more than 2/3 teaspoon per day (preferably sea salt, spices, herbs and aromatic herbs, lemon, vinegar),
- intake of dietary fiber – 40 g per day = 3 tables. spoons of wheat bran, grain bread (or with bran), various cereals, especially buckwheat and oatmeal, vegetables allowed 400-500 g per day,
- reducing purines in food - eliminating prohibited foods.
What should you avoid?
The following foods have a very high purine content. If uric acid is high, you should avoid them first:
- Beef. Per 100 grams there are about 400 mg of purines and even more. For example, in the thymus gland (meat from the neck) the level reaches 600 mg per 100 grams of fresh meat. And purines, by the way, are not destroyed by heat treatment. Pork is only slightly inferior in “harmfulness” to beef.
- Beer. An extremely dangerous product. In addition to alcohol, it contains brewer's yeast. And their purines are almost 2 times higher than in beef. In addition to this, beer stimulates urination, during which potassium is actively washed out of the body, but the concentration of sodium, on the contrary, increases.
- Mushrooms. They are also rich in purines; in their biochemical composition they are something between vegetables and meat. Dried porcini mushrooms are especially “harmful” if there is an excess of uric acid in the blood.
- Fish in oil. Smoked fish should also be included here. After processing, the content of unsaturated fatty acids in them decreases, but purines do not disappear. Accordingly, it is still better to avoid sprat in tomato sauce or tuna in white marinade. Such products contain much less purines than beef or pork, but still quite a lot.
- Animal by-products. These include the lungs, kidneys, liver, and spleen. Contain a large amount of purines and sodium. And since these products are most often used as ingredients in the production of sausages, they should also be abandoned.
- Baker's yeast. Accordingly, baked goods that are also prepared with yeast should also be excluded from the diet. Instead of bread, it is better to use corn tortillas, and baked ones.
Features of diet Table 6 for men, women
Men get gout much more often than women. In representatives of the stronger sex, the pathology usually appears after 40 years, and in women - after menopause.
Common causes of gout in men are obesity and/or frequent alcohol consumption. This is especially true for beer lovers. Therefore, a diet for gout for a man should exclude the consumption of fatty treats, “foamy” and other alcohol in any quantity.
For women, the main problem is regular overeating, eating large amounts of baked goods and chocolate.
These points need to be given special attention when changing your diet. Favorite forbidden sweets should be replaced with homemade marmalade from fruit/berry juice, marshmallows, jam, caramel
You need to reduce the portions for each meal.
Signs of an elevated level
, the following diseases and symptoms often :
- arthritis, rheumatism;
- urolithiasis disease;
- atherosclerosis (against the background of an imbalance of plasma nutrients and the accumulation of excess metabolic end products in it);
- eczema, psoriasis;
- acidosis (due to metabolic disorders).
Doctors also say that elevated levels of uric acid can become a primary factor in the development of certain cancer pathologies. At the initial stages, the increased rate is often accompanied by signs of mild allergies (with a rash all over the body).
Summing up
A diet with elevated uric acid levels can eliminate the problem and normalize the functioning of the body. Such treatment and prevention of possible diseases will prevent the accumulation of purines in the body and the development of gout.
After consulting with your doctor, you can always find out the level of uric acid in the blood and a list of foods that should be included in your diet. It is important to take care of this in time so as not to regret it for the rest of your life.
What foods can you eat?
A diet for high levels of uric acid in the body should be prescribed by a specialist, since the choice of dishes directly depends on the specific case. However, there are a number of acid-reducing foods that you should include in your diet. Among the foods you can eat:
- vegetables and fruits, which are allowed to be consumed in unlimited quantities. Citrus fruits are especially worth highlighting. Even if you already eat fruits, the amount in your diet can be increased;
- dairy products will become an indispensable assistant as the main source of protein. It is better to eat low-fat foods;
- Mineral water or green tea are excellent as a regularly consumed liquid. This also includes black tea, juices and fruit drinks, but they should not be abused;
- Allowed foods include eggs, but you can eat no more than 2 of them per day;
- even boiled fish and meat can be consumed without fear, it is only important to change the water several times during the cooking process, which will allow you to get rid of most of the purines;
- foods such as cereals, pasta or butter should be consumed in limited quantities;
- if you want something sweet, you can always eat pudding, jelly or some kind of fruit dessert.
By including vegetables and dishes that include green onions in your menu, you can normalize the level of uric acid in the body.
DIET:
Patients with gout must adhere to a strict diet in everyday life, the purpose of which is to reduce the concentration of salts and uric acid in the body.
The diet, in fact, consists of prohibiting the consumption of foods with high levels of purines and oxalic acid, and limiting salt intake. sugar and fats. Consumption of dairy products, vegetables, fruits and liquids is encouraged. Processing of products is permitted - in raw form. Boiled, stewed, baked foods, fried foods are best avoided. Diet: 4 times a day.
Products allowed for consumption:
· Chicken and duck meat, preferably boiled
· Low-fat fish such as cod, pollock – 200g no more than 3 times a week
· Egg – preferably no more than 1 egg per day
· Vegetable oil, flaxseed oil has proven to be excellent
· Bakery products made from 1-2 grade flour
· Vegetarian, cold soups. Milk-based soups
· Vegetables in unlimited quantities (except those that are prohibited). Vegetable salads, stews, caviar. Celery is especially recommended
· Berries, fruits (except forbidden ones), dried fruits. Cherries, apples, lemon are especially recommended
· Homemade sauces with vegetable broth, vegetable oil, spices
· Weak green tea, juices, fruit drinks, compotes
Products excluded from the diet:
· Red meat
Approximate diet during the diet
The diet for gout and high uric acid consists of many recipes, but all of them, one way or another, involve consuming only permitted foods and only in permitted quantities. So, for breakfast you can eat a vitamin salad, the components of which are fresh carrots and a peeled apple. The products need to be grated and mixed with a spoon of low-fat sour cream.
Okroshka is also useful during this recovery period. Its composition can be ordinary (radish, cucumber, eggs, potatoes and carrots), and low-fat kefir, low-fat sour cream and a little mineral water can be used as filling. It is useful to drink a decoction of rose hips during the day, eat more apples, for dinner you can eat a potato cutlet, drink weak tea or jelly. If the patient does not have problems with excess weight, it is allowed to eat a piece of marmalade, a spoonful of jam or marmalade, and a little dark chocolate.
What affects the amount of urea in the body?
It is worth noting that urea and uric acid are different components. Urea is the result of the breakdown of proteins with amino acids and a number of other compounds. Normally, it occurs in the liver, then enters the kidneys with the blood flow.
Uric acid is produced in the liver, brain and blood due to the breakdown of purine compounds. But both components are aimed at removing nitrogen compounds - ammonia - from the body. Therefore, they are combined into one category.
Diet directly affects the level of urea in the body. The amount of protein breakdown products is also affected by physical activity, as well as the time of day. Therefore, from time to time, during the day, its indicator may differ. But this does not affect the body in any way. The exception is if the norm is exceeded by 2-3 times.
Significant excess occurs when eating foods with high levels of purines. This includes animal proteins, often meat.
The norm for this component is 600-1000 milligrams. This is also affected by the age, height and weight of the individual.
We can also talk about an increase in urea in the body, if we are talking about the functionality of the kidneys and liver, a violation of the water-salt balance, as well as the balance of potassium with sodium in the blood.
Experts note that the concentration of the final product of protein breakdown may indicate a malfunction of the urinary system. More often, this indicates improper functioning of the kidneys and the possible presence of stones there.
What foods should you avoid?
There are a number of foods that increase uric acid. At first it will not be noticeable, but soon excess uric acid in the body will lead to the appearance of gout or another equally dangerous disease. The list of prohibited foods is small, but every person who cares about their health should know what they should not eat:
- As noted above, the list of foods to avoid includes broths. It is in broths that the content of harmful purines is very high;
- Fried and smoked foods should also be avoided. If you want to eat meat or fatty fish, just boil or steam them. These are the most harmless cooking methods, which also allow you to preserve the natural taste of the food;
- among drinks it is worth noting not only alcohol, but also coffee;
- Unfortunately, most of the sweets that we all love so much contain harmful substances. Therefore, chocolate, honey, pastries, and cakes are prohibited;
- Reduce your intake of sorrel, radishes and cauliflower. These products, despite their obvious usefulness, interfere with the removal of purines from the body.
Eating fish and legumes, just like meat, is not prohibited. It is only important to adhere to certain rules that will not be difficult to get used to.

- Hereditary factor. If a person has had problems with high levels of uric acid, then with a high degree of probability this disease can also manifest itself in his children and grandchildren.
What should women limit themselves to?
A diet for high uric acid in women is becoming increasingly popular. If earlier this ailment was characteristic mostly of men, then in the last few years, for example, women have often begun to suffer from gout.
Following a diet and taking a drug such as Purinol (Allopurinol) gives excellent results already in the first month. As for food, the diet for women also involves limiting the consumption of sausages, alcohol, strong meat broths, fatty foods, black coffee, strong tea, etc.
If a woman does not tolerate the diet very well, the doctor may prescribe treatment only in the form of medication. However, it must be remembered that the effect of such therapy will not be noticeable soon.
Since a characteristic disease progresses much more often in the female body with age (during the upcoming menopause), patients should clearly understand that overall well-being, performance, physical activity and emotional stability depend on a properly selected diet.
- The diet includes 5-6 meals. These are three main meals with a hearty breakfast, plus additional snacks throughout the day.
- The doctor very precisely stipulates the norms of certain products, and it is important not to violate them. For example, boiled meat for gout can be eaten only 3 times a week, no more.
- In the absence of extensive pathologies with the kidneys, a patient with gout is allowed to drink up to 3 liters of fluid per day.
Traditional remedies
If the level of uric acid (urate) is elevated, medication is prescribed. The drugs are prescribed by doctors. Based on the results obtained, they will decide how to remove the salts. Medicines can act in two ways:
- increase the release of urate from the joints;
- inhibit the development of uric acid.
Treatment begins at the time of gout exacerbation. Medicines and diet are prescribed to reduce inflammation and increase acid output. To properly prescribe treatment, the doctor will need a urine sample, which was collected throughout the day. Such an analysis will provide insight into the cause of the pathology.
Medicines that the doctor may prescribe:
- Probenecid. The medicine promotes the release of urates from the body during gout disease. The product stimulates the release of salts and deposits are reduced to a minimum.
- Allobenecid. The drug reduces the formation of urates in the blood and reduces the risk of exacerbation of the disease. The medication is supposed to be taken for a long time and is designed for combined treatment with diet and exercise. After two weeks of taking the drug, the acid level returns to normal, but the medication continues, only the dose is reduced. After six months, the dosage of the drug is reduced to a minimum and is taken only to maintain the effect obtained. Some people will have to take the drug for life. This approach gives positive dynamics.
- Blemaren. One of the effective medications in the fight against gout. The product normalizes the function of uric acid metabolism and promotes the dissolution of urates. Reducing the salt value has a beneficial effect on the health and well-being of patients. The medicine does not cause side effects on the kidneys and liver. The maximum course of taking the medication is six months.
Curing gout is a long and labor-intensive process. It is impossible to completely recover from the disease, you can only alleviate the condition and relieve the attack.
Pros and cons of the method, contraindications
Doctors and nutritionists recommend following this method of eating when uric acid increases. In practice, it has shown effectiveness and rapid recovery.
- The exchange of purine bases is normalized.
- Prevention of stone formation and salt deposits.
- Over a short period of time, the level of uric acid decreases.
- The menu is varied, the patient does not get bored.
- No need to starve.
The only drawback of this diet is the need to avoid salt, pepper, food additives, and reduce meat consumption.
This is not easy for some patients; they have to get used to the therapeutic diet. This diet has no other disadvantages.
There are no contraindications, but if you have chronic diseases, you should consult your doctor. Individual diet adjustments are possible.
List of dangerous products
1 Seafood
Some foods are high in purines. Therefore, if you have high uric acid levels, you should eat them in moderation. These include the following seafood: crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels.
These products should be avoided in any form, fresh, canned, smoked, as they contribute to an increase in the level of uric acid in the blood.
2 Red meat
This is another product that most contributes to increasing its level. If you have high uric acid levels, you should eliminate it from your diet completely. Pork and beef also contain a high percentage of purines, especially if they are very fatty. In addition, offal, meat extracts, minced meat, and kidneys are dangerous.
3 Legumes
Lentils, peas, and beans are high in purines, so people with high uric acid levels should limit their consumption to once or twice a week.
4 Vegetables
Some vegetables should also be eaten in moderation, including: asparagus, mushrooms, cauliflower, spinach, radishes and leeks.
5 Alcoholic drinks
Beer is more harmful to people with high uric acid than seafood and meat. This is because it increases the production of this compound in the body and makes it harder to eliminate. Experts recommend avoiding beer if you suffer from gout.
6 Sweet drinks and sweet pastries
Soft drinks and commercial fruit juices that contain corn syrup also stimulate uric acid production. Sweet pastries, sweets, and baked goods also increase the problem, especially if they contain a lot of sugar.
7 Coffee
Regulate the amount of coffee you consume daily. Excessive amounts can be harmful, so it is best to limit yourself to one cup per day.
Uric Acid: High Level Symptoms
When lactic acid levels are very high, problems such as gout and kidney stones can occur, the most common symptoms of which are:
Big toe pain
Intense pain and inflammation in the joints.
Difficulty urinating
Tachycardia
Knee pain
Stones in the kidneys
Fatigue
Sharp acid crystals may appear in joints
Your doctor should conduct a full examination to find out if you have the problem and prescribe treatment, which should primarily include changes in your diet.
Joint pain can be uncomfortable, but you can take steps to help relieve the problem, such as applying cold compresses to sore joints.
The doctor may prescribe you non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs if he deems it necessary; they have a rapid anti-inflammatory effect.
You may be prescribed medications in low doses to begin with, which can then be increased over time, always under the supervision of a doctor.
The duration of treatment can be from 6 to 12 months.
During this period, you should take care of your diet and maintain physical activity. Light but regular exercise is ideal for this, moderate but regular exercise.* published by econet.ru

Its effect on the body
To cleanse the blood and productively remove oxalic acid from the affected body, a therapeutic diet with fasting days is necessary. In the latter case, we are talking about the recommended period when it is possible to restore the chemical composition of the blood without the participation of medications. Here are some foods that can remove uric acid from the body:
- plums;
- pears;
- apples;
- potato;
- apricots.
Weight normalization
Normalizing your weight will help reduce uric acid levels.
Obesity is one of the key factors in increasing uric acid levels in the blood. Insulin resistance occurs in almost everyone who is obese and leads to the development of gout. This increases the level of acid in the urine.
This condition is known as metabolic syndrome, which includes insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia (increased amounts of cholesterol in the blood).
Weight loss has a positive effect on insulin resistance, which leads to a decrease in the amount of uric acid. However, it is important to avoid strict diets, such as low-carbohydrate or low-protein diets, because...
this can lead to an increase in the amount of purines, the metabolic product of which is uric acid. This is due to the destruction of muscle tissue, and it is safe to gradually reduce body weight: within 0.5 kg per week.
For many years, gout has been associated with drinking too much alcohol, although the exact mechanism is still unclear. Some types of alcohol, such as beer, contain high levels of purines, which may be an indirect cause of gout.
On the other hand, alcohol is partly linked to obesity, as 1 gram of alcohol contains 7 calories. Drinking beer puts you at greater risk of a gout attack than hard liquor, but drinking wine in moderation has no effect on its development.
1 dose of alcohol:
- 25 ml of strong alcohol;
- 250–300 ml of medium strength beer (3–4%);
- 125 ml wine (11%).
The higher the alcohol content of drinks, the more doses of alcohol they contain. For example, half a liter of 5.2% beer is 3 doses, and 125 ml of 12% wine is 1.5 doses.
Water balance
To prevent the deposition of uric acid crystals in tissues, you need to drink enough fluids daily.
A sufficient amount of fluid is a good prevention of deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints. It is necessary to drink at least 2 liters of water per day, but the need can increase to 3–3.5 liters depending on weight, air temperature and physical activity.
Purines are natural components of many foods. During the metabolic process, they decompose to uric acid. Therefore, their reduction leads to a reduction in the risk of gout.
It is necessary to reduce the amount of meat (especially red), fish, and poultry as the main source of purines. One such meal per day is possible, and for the rest the meat should be replaced with legumes, eggs or low-fat dairy products. It is also useful to give up meat altogether 1-2 days a week.
A diet to reduce uric acid in the blood (or joints) has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the entire body. It reduces the level of uric acid, removes salts from the body, and cleanses it.
There is a saturation with vitamins and minerals, which increase protective properties and immunity.
The health of the joints is restored, the person will be able to move a lot without feeling pain. His condition will improve, he will feel a surge of strength and energy.
Metabolic processes are normalized, and the likelihood of recurrence of the disease is reduced. I manage to stay healthy and feel great.
Drugs that block uric acid synthesis
Under the influence of drugs from this group, the body’s reactions that produce the synthesis of uric acid are inhibited by blocking the main enzyme of this process - xanthine oxidase. Most patients note a positive effect from these medications. The frequency of attacks decreases, as well as their intensity, and the mobility of the affected joints increases as pain, inflammatory swelling and stiffness disappear. The most prescribed and used medication is Allopurinol.
Allopurinol
The drug reduces the concentration of uric acid in all liquid media. Its dosage is determined by the doctor individually, taking into account the degree of advanced gout in a particular case. The 24-hour dose can range from 100 to 900 mg. The medication is divided into 2, 3 or 4 times. It must necessarily occur after eating. The dose of the drug is gradually increased and, after achieving the desired result, switched to maintenance treatment.
Important!
The medication can be used to treat children in a daily amount of 10 to 20 mg per kilogram of weight. Allopurinol is contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women, and it should not be used in patients who have severe dysfunction of the thyroid gland, kidneys or liver. The cost of Allopurinol is 93 rubles for 50 tablets at a dose of 100 mg
Orotic acid
Orotic acid for gout is also an inhibitor of uric acid synthesis, but its effect is less pronounced than that of Allopurinol. The effectiveness of the drug is manifested over a long period of use. The dose per day ranges from 250 to 500 mg and is selected by the doctor individually. Orotic acid is taken for no more than 20 days in a row. There must be a break before the next course.
On a note!
It is better to use this remedy for treatment in the very initial stages of gout. The cost of Orotic acid averages about 170 rubles.
General rules of nutrition for illness
If a patient's gout progresses, in order to live without pain, it is necessary to choose an antipurine daily diet, that is, to minimize the presence of this acid in the daily menu. To do this, you can choose a strict vegetarian diet or not be categorical and adhere to the following medical recommendations:
- Eliminate protein foods from the daily menu as much as possible, since protein metabolism increases the concentration of urates in tissues.
- Drink plenty of fluids, which reduces the concentration of uric acid and promotes the elimination of salt naturally.
- Reduce your consumption of table salt as much as possible, choose fresh and lean dishes without adding spices.
- It is very important to eliminate the feeling of hunger, so the diet can be reasonably high in calories and satisfying. Stop fasting immediately, otherwise a gout attack is guaranteed.
- It is important to remember the list of permitted and prohibited foods, since you will have to adhere to the updated diet throughout your life.
Medical nutrition is prescribed for various diseases.
You must adhere to the diet for at least one month. If the patient's condition has not improved, the uric acid level is still high, the diet is extended.
Treatment should be supervised by a doctor. Only he can tell you when you can go off the diet.
If the doctor has given permission to withdraw from medical nutrition, the patient can slightly increase the portions and include prohibited foods in the menu in small quantities.
However, it is recommended to continue to eat properly so that the disease does not reappear.
A diet for high uric acid is incredibly effective and allows you to achieve recovery. Following the rules of therapeutic nutrition, the patient will recover.
This is one of the best ways to fight the disease, allowing you to recover quickly.
You need to give up fatty foods in favor of dairy products. Fats prevent the removal of acidic substances.
- Meat and fish dishes should be consumed only on rare occasions.
- It is necessary to drink as much fluid as possible.
- Alcoholic drinks such as beer and wine should be excluded during the diet.
- Once a week you should arrange a fasting day for the body.
If a person with high acidity has some kind of disease, for example, obesity or kidney disease, then only a doctor can determine the diet rules for him.
