What is cystitis
Before determining how effective a medication is in the treatment of cystitis, it is necessary to understand what is hidden under this term.
Cystitis is a disease in which the walls of the bladder become inflamed. Most often, the pathology is observed in women or children.
The main symptom of cystitis is a frequent urge to urinate and pain in the lower abdomen
The disease is characterized by the following symptoms:
- acute pain in the projection of the bladder and perineum;
- frequent urination (often accompanied by a burning sensation);
- temperature increase;
- unpleasant odor of urine;
- nausea, vomiting.
Cystitis can be:
- Infectious. The cause of the disease is an infection that has entered the body through a descending (for example, caries) or ascending path (gynecological diseases, insufficient hygiene).
- Non-bacterial. Irritation of the mucous membrane by various chemicals leads to pathology.
The effectiveness of Urolesan for cystitis
Urolesan does not have an antibacterial effect. Therefore, it is not capable of destroying the pathogen in infectious cystitis. Antibiotics can solve this problem.
Since Urolesan relieves inflammation, eliminates itching and burning, and alleviates pain, it is often recommended for cystitis. However, the drug cannot act as monotherapy; it is recommended only in complex treatment. Unfortunately, taking Urolesan alone will not provide effective relief from the pathology.

Pharmacological properties
The properties of the drug directly depend on its basic composition.
- Peppermint and hop cones reduce the antispasmodic properties of the muscles of the urinary tract and gall bladder, and have an analgesic effect.
- Eliminates attacks of hepatic and renal colic.
- Relieves swelling of the liver tissue.
- Diuresis – urine output – increases, which makes it easier for whole stones or small parts to pass out. Urolesan essential oils contain termpenes (unsaturated hydrocarbons), which accelerate blood flow in the kidneys. This is what promotes urine excretion. Later, terpenes combine with glucuronic acid, which prevents urine from crystallizing, as it functions as a protective colloid. All together is excreted naturally through the ureters.
- Activates the removal of chlorides and urea from the blood.
- Leads to normal indicators of the reaction of the urine environment. In a normal environment, inflammatory processes are reduced, and the development of a pathogenic bacteriological environment is also reduced.
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
- Has a calming effect.
Accelerating the urinary process helps remove pathogenic microorganisms from the bladder and ureters. This helps in faster recovery. The medication is quickly absorbed by the body, enters the bloodstream, relieves a painful attack of cystitis, and within half an hour after administration, relief is felt in the condition. In addition, a slight calming effect helps to relax and take a break from painful sensations.
Characteristics of the drug
Urolesan is a drug that can cure cystitis and solve the problem effectively, gently affecting the organs. While it reduces the symptoms of cystitis and treats inflammation, it also has a beneficial effect on all organs located near the bladder.
Urolesan capsules
This is an auxiliary remedy for kidney stones and pyelonephritis ─ has a significant effect on the condition of these organs, supports their functions and treats ailments. It is often prescribed for pain in the liver. This suggests that the medicine acts universally and has a gentle effect on the problem.
This medicine is considered a herbal medicine, created on the basis of natural oils, herbs and useful binding ingredients. Thanks to its composition, it can be used by many without fear of “undermining” the body, creating problems for other organs, or worsening the condition of the immune system.
A natural medicine can help damaged areas of the body with a minimum of side effects, which only concern some warnings about use.
The drug contains castor oil, oregano extracts and carrot seeds.
There is also healing essential oil extracted from fir. This mixture creates a taste that many patients do not like. This is the biggest and probably the only defect that we can talk about.
The medicine first appeared in the last century in the early 80s. It was created in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. A little later, they began to produce an analogue of this valuable drug abroad, it was called cystenal. If we talk about domestic production, then this medicine works much better and more efficiently than its analogue, and also exceeds the quality of all its properties and composition.
Now Urolesan is used everywhere, and this is the first medicine that doctors remember when diagnosing cystitis.
Indications for use in cystitis
Urolesan is used for cystitis in acute and chronic forms of the disease. It eliminates the inflammatory process and fights pathogenic microorganisms that are found in the genitourinary organs.
Patients also note effectiveness in the following pathologies:
- urolithiasis disease;
- chronic cholecystitis;
- dystension of the biliary tract of the hyperkinetic type;
- salt diathesis;
- stones in the bladder;
- chronic and acute infections of the kidneys and urinary tract, including pyelonephritis;
- purulent processes in the gallbladder.
Urolesan acts as a prophylactic for chronic forms of cystitis. But in acute forms, as well as during exacerbation of chronic forms, it is used as an additional drug in complex therapy.
Analogues of Urolesan
Tablets, which are sometimes mistakenly considered similar to Urolesan, although they have a favorable price, cannot be compared with it in terms of their effect on the body. There are products that are similar in their effect on cystitis bacteria, but they are much more expensive, which is also not always encouraging when selecting a drug.
If we take into account similar drugs that have a similar effect, these are Canephron and Cyston, but the composition of these drugs is different.
Cystone is affordable and has anti-inflammatory effects and also eliminates germs in the body. It is often used in the fight against pyelonephritis and cystitis. Its composition is varied and consists of herbs, including particles of mumiyo powder.
If you plan to replace Urolesan with another effective remedy, then it is recommended to pay attention to Canephron . It, like its analogue, has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
If you experience pain during urination, you can take Canephron and forget about cramps for a while. However, it is used more to eliminate the symptoms of pyelonephritis than cystitis.
Another remedy of particular interest and similar properties is Phytolysin . It is produced in Poland, and its composition is filled with various herbs that have a beneficial effect in the treatment of urolithiasis and bladder inflammation.
The peculiarity of Phytolysin is that it is available in the form of a paste , which must first be dissolved in a glass of water. The price can also please you when choosing a substitute to combat cystitis.
Read our article on how to take Phytolysin for cystitis.
The cost of a hundred-gram tube is about three hundred rubles, which, compared to other drugs, does not represent a high cost, especially since the tube is enough for the entire intended course of treatment.
It is worth noting that the course of treatment can last up to one month and it will take no more than one tube of paste, which means this product can be used as a substitute for Urolesan.
Which of these drugs is better can only be recommended by a urologist, based on the patient’s individual tests and complaints, and of course his allergic reactions, if any.
Directions for use and dosage
The method of administration and dosage primarily depends on the type in which the drug is produced. Also depends on age and specific use.
In liquid form
In the form of drops, the drug has a broader purpose, but its use is permitted for persons over 14 years of age. This limitation is due to the alcohol contained in us (60% of the total volume). They are dripped onto a piece of sugar, bread crumb, or added to water or herbal decoction. This will reduce the unpleasant taste that occurs due to the large number of essential oils in the composition. Suitable decoctions are rose hips, St. John's wort, birch leaves. You can also use renal teas, which help cleanse the kidneys and bladder.
Urolesan for cystitis in the form of drops is taken on an empty stomach, 7-10 drops three times a day
Take on an empty stomach, 7-10 drops three times a day. The course of treatment varies from 5 days to 1 month.
In some cases, it is possible to increase the dosage to 15-20 drops.
Capsules
Capsules also have an age limit. They are recommended for use by adults and adolescents over 18 years of age.
Taking capsules is similar to drops. But this form may be more convenient to use, since it does not have an unpleasant taste and does not require additional devices for use.
The medication is taken orally, on an empty stomach, 1 piece three times a day. If colic occurs, the dosage is increased by 2 times. After the unpleasant symptom disappears, return to the previous single dose - 1 capsule. The capsules are taken whole, without chewing, swallowed immediately and washed down with plenty of water.
In acute forms of the disease, the course of treatment is 5-7 days. In case of chronic cystitis, the period can be extended to 1 month. A repeated course of therapy is prescribed only at the discretion of the attending physician.
In syrup
Urolesan in syrup is used to treat children from 1 year of age. It has a pleasant smell and taste and does not require the additional use of anything else. The drug can also be taken in adult patients, while increasing the dosage to the required level.
The dose is measured depending on the age of the child:
- up to 2 years – 1-2 ml;
- 2-7 years – 2-4 ml.
After 8 years, a child is treated like an adult. The dosage in this case is usually prescribed 5 ml. But in some cases it can be increased, according to the indications and prescription of the attending physician. Reception is carried out on an empty stomach 3 times a day. The course lasts about a week, but can also be extended to 1 month.
Urolesan for cystitis in syrup is used to treat children from 1 year of age
In this case, the therapeutic course is considered strictly individually. The nature and severity of the disease, the patient’s age and condition, the presence or absence of concomitant diseases, and contraindications are taken into account.
In what forms is it available?
The drug Urolesan exists on the market in three dosage forms:
- green hard gelatin capsules, 10 capsules per blister; only 4 blisters are placed in one pack;
- light yellow syrup in a volume of 90 ml or 180 ml in a jar or bottle;
- mint-scented drops, 25 ml in a dropper bottle, placed in a pack.

There are not many side effects with this drug. But if at least one of them occurs, you need to stop taking the medication and consult your doctor.
- nausea, vomiting;
- pain in the epigastric region;
- disorder in digestive behavior;
- hives;
- itching;
- redness of the skin (main location: face, neck);
- rash;

- high blood pressure.
Nausea and vomiting are some of the possible side effects of Urolesan
In some cases, an overdose is possible. Its main symptoms are:
- severe dizziness;
- painful sensations in the abdomen;
- nausea, vomiting.
In this case, use of Urolesan is temporarily stopped. To relieve intoxication, several measures are taken:
- Drinking plenty of fluids will help remove excess fluids naturally.
- Activated carbon – deactivates remaining components in the digestive system.
- Atropine sulfate – blocks M-cholinergic receptors. Relieves painful spasms of intestinal muscles, reduces reflex reactions and prevents bronchial and laryngospasms.
- Bed rest will restore strength to the patient and normalize his condition.
As a rule, this drug is well tolerated, and side effects are very rare. More often, side symptoms are a manifestation of an overdose.
Adverse drug reactions
Urolesan is described to be well tolerated by patients. However, some patients reported the following adverse reactions:
- Digestive disorders: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
- Nervous disorders: general weakness, headache, dizziness, muscle tremors.
- Changes in heart activity: deviations in blood pressure from normal values, decreased heart rate.
- Immune susceptibility of the body: itching, redness of the skin, rashes, burning in the mouth, swelling of the soft tissues of the face or tongue, suffocation, anaphylactic shock.
Contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Urolesan include:
- hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
- individual intolerance or allergic reactions to the medication itself;
- lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, glucose-galactase malabsorption;
- peptic ulcers of the stomach, duodenum;
- hyperacid gastritis;
- kidney stones whose diameter exceeds 3 mm;
- age restrictions for each release form.
Also, patients with diabetes should not use Urolesan in syrup due to the sugar it contains. They are prescribed it in drops or capsules.
For chronic alcohol dependence, do not use the drug in drops due to the high alcohol content. Urolesan capsules are intended for them.
Urolesan is prescribed with caution when:
- presence of liver diseases;
- brain pathologies;
- recent traumatic brain injury.
During pregnancy and lactation
There have been no studies of the drug in pregnant women, so it is impossible to say with certainty about its safety. Given its natural composition, there are some components that are not advisable to consume in different trimesters during pregnancy. Most often it is replaced with other similar medications. The use of Urolesan in this period is due to the threat exceeding the life of the mother over the danger to the health of the child.
Also, during breastfeeding, it is not known whether there are side effects and whether the components of the drug are absorbed into mother's milk. Therefore, in cases of using Urolesan, lactation is temporarily stopped until the therapeutic course is completed.
Urolesan and alcohol: compatibility
The manufacturer of Urolesan does not indicate in the safety information of the drug the specifics of use while taking alcoholic beverages. It is likely that the issues of compatibility of Urolesan and alcohol have not been studied separately.
However, it should be remembered that any product containing alcohol increases the level of uric acid in the blood and provokes the development of uraturia (uric acid in the urine). Under certain conditions, the precipitation of crystals of uric acid and its salts (urates) is fraught with the formation of stones. Therefore, treatment of any disease of the urinary system is accompanied by recommendations to abstain from drinking alcohol.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
The medicine contains a number of natural plant components that have a direct effect on the functioning of the genitourinary system, the composition and amount of urea.
Has an antispasmodic effect. The drug changes the pH of urine towards a more acidic environment and thus promotes the removal of excess salts (chlorides) from the kidneys. The drug directly affects the functioning of the liver and increases the secretion of bile.
The medicine also exhibits high antimicrobial activity.

Description of the medication
A complex herbal remedy that perfectly fights bladder infections. Many experts prescribe the drug for cystitis in men and women. Thanks to its choleretic, litholytic, and diuretic effects, the herbal medicine quickly alleviates the patient’s condition. Regular use of the drug Urolesan helps dissolve the sand contained in the urine. It is possible to eliminate inflammation in cystitis thanks to the mint oil included in the composition. Urolesan helps strengthen local immunity and stimulates blood circulation in the bladder .
The drug effectively eliminates the symptoms of cystitis
Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) can be caused by either a viral or bacterial infection. In the latter case, treatment cannot be carried out without the use of antibiotics. Complex therapy may also include Urolesan. Due to its bactericidal effect, the medicine increases the effect of antibiotics.
One of the unpleasant symptoms of acute cystitis is sharp pain when urinating. Pain syndrome can also be eliminated with the help of the drug Urolesan. The active components of the drug begin to act within 30 minutes after use. The therapeutic effect can last from 2–4 hours (depending on the individual characteristics of the patient’s body). The medicine is completely excreted from the body in urine and feces.
The essential oils that are part of the drug penetrate the blood quite quickly. They not only suppress the proliferation of microbes, but also reduce their toxic effects. An improvement in the patient's condition is observed the very next day after the start of cystitis therapy.
Motor therapy with the use of the drug Urolesan can be carried out for chronic cystitis. In this way, many patients manage to avoid relapses of the disease.
